Does CBD have psychoactive effects?

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical found naturally and is the second most common active component in cannabis of the Cannabaceae family. While its exact legal status has been in upheaval, CBD is freely accessible in most parts of the United States. Unlike THC, CBD does not cause a “high” by itself.

The FDA has approved only one CBD product, a prescription drug to treat seizures associated with Lennox Gastaut syndrome (LGS), Dravet syndrome (DS), or tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). However, various studies recognized CBD as a potential treatment for a wide range of health problems including childhood epilepsy, chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia.

CBD and Sleep

In order to establish the usefulness of CBD in treating different health issues, more research is needed right now. However, early studies showed that CBD may be beneficial in the treatment of a variety of sleep problems, including insomnia and REM sleep behavior disorder.

Studies suggested CBD may also improve sleep quality by reducing anxiety, increasing emotions of well-being, easing muscle tension, and reducing acute discomfort. It is also suggested that CBD alleviated symptoms of insomnia more efficiently than THC.

CBD and Pain and Inflammation

CBD is recognized as a potential medication to treat pain, inflammation, seizures, and anxiety without the euphoric effects of THC.

It has been suggested that CBD may indirectly improve anti-inflammatory properties by lowering pro-inflammatory chemicals in the bloodstream. Research shows that CBD decreases the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, suppresses T cell proliferation, causes T cell death and diminishes migration and adhesion of immune cells.
